Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12 (NIV)
When I collect the mail from our PO Box at the beginning of each week, there is always a People magazine. As I flip through the pages, I see 2 to 3 pages featuring famous people I don’t recognize, sporting the latest fashion trends from Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Dior. I wonder why these designers can command such high prices, especially when the outfits often reveal more skin than material. Yet, they are willing to pay extravagant prices to showcase their appearance and wealth. You and I might buy knockoffs of these designs for next to nothing the following season because they are no longer the “hot” item among fashionistas.
Today's verse invites us to consider a different kind of clothing—one that is absolutely free and designed by the unparalleled Creator. Not only is it free, but it’s made of whole cloth with no gaps for sin to peek through. This spiritual clothing is transformational! When we wear these virtues, we become new people, influencing our lives and those of others. No physical clothing or designer can make us look and feel as good.
As we reflect on this verse, let’s examine our own lives and consider how we can "clothe" ourselves with these virtues every day. Unlike fleeting fashion trends, these spiritual garments never go out of style and have the power to transform our lives and those around us. May we embrace this divine wardrobe and wear it proudly, knowing we are God's chosen and dearly loved.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the precious gift of being Your chosen people, holy and dearly loved. Help us to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience so that our lives may reflect Your love and grace. Teach us to embrace these virtues wholeheartedly and to be transformed by them. Guide us to influence others positively through our actions and words. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
