The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. - Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)
Perhaps you have noticed how when something terrible happens, we seek God. I am currently reading a book called Ordinary Heroes by Joseph Pfeifer, the FDNY fire chief whose unit was the first to arrive at the Twin Towers on 9/11. It has brought me back to the events of that terrible day, the loss of life, and the nation plunged into darkness. In the days that followed, as Americans sought to make sense of the atrocity, they turned to the church, seeking solace and healing from God.
Today’s verse speaks to a similar experience of darkness and the hope of light. This passage was a promise to Israel, a nation often oppressed and seeking deliverance. It foretold the coming of a great light to bring salvation and hope. This promise provided a beacon of hope for the people of Israel during their times of trial and tribulation.
This promise reaches its profound fruition in Isaiah 9:6, which speaks of the future hope: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." The fulfillment of this promise came through the birth of Jesus Christ, the great light that dawned in the world, piercing the darkness of sin and despair. Jesus, the promised Messiah, came as a child but carried the weight of divine authority. His titles—Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace—reflect His divine nature and mission to bring light and life to a darkened world.
Today, we can find immense comfort in this promise. Just as Israel awaited the Messiah's arrival, we now look forward to Jesus' return. The hope that Jesus brings is not confined to a single moment in history but spans the ages, offering light to all who walk in darkness. In moments of personal or collective tragedy, we can cling to the assurance that the light of Christ will ultimately dispel all darkness.
Just as Americans turned to God in the wake of 9/11, seeking His presence and peace, we can turn to Jesus in our times of need. He is our Wonderful Counselor, guiding us through confusion. He is our Mighty God, providing strength in our weakness. He is our Everlasting Father, offering us unconditional love. And He is our Prince of Peace, bringing calm amid chaos.
In every season of life, in moments of profound joy or deep sorrow, God’s promise, as revealed to Isaiah, is a steadfast reminder of HIs enduring faithfulness. As we await His glorious return, may we continue to seek and reflect His light in our lives.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the light of Jesus that shines in the darkest moments of our lives. As we reflect on Your promises and the hope fulfilled through Christ, we ask that You fill our hearts with peace and courage. Help us to be bearers of Your light, sharing Your love and grace with those around us. Strengthen our faith as we await the glorious return of our Savior, and may His light guide us every day. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
