“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.” - Philippians 1:9-11 (NIV)
In many Christian traditions, the clergy offer a benediction, a form of prayer, at the end of each worship service—a short invocation for divine help, sending the congregation out with God’s favor and protection. In the Bible, we find many well-known prayers. For example, in Numbers 6:24-26, God gives this blessing to Aaron for the people of Israel, “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount includes several blessings known as the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12).
Similarly, the Apostle Paul begins his letter to the Philippians with a profound blessing for the church in Philippi. It emphasizes the growth of love intertwined with knowledge and discernment. He prays that their love would not just increase but abound “more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.” This prayer is beautiful because it highlights that true Christian love is not blind or superficial but deeply rooted in understanding and wisdom. Such love enables believers to discern what is best, leading to purity and righteousness.
The message of this prayer is incredibly relevant today. In a world where love is often portrayed as mere emotion or sentiment, Paul’s prayer reminds us that genuine love involves a deep understanding of God’s truth and a wise application of that truth in our lives. It calls us to grow in our love for God and others, guided by knowledge and discernment so that our lives reflect the righteousness of Christ.
How might living in this kind of love look today? Imagine a professional in a fast-paced corporate environment striving to live out their faith daily. They often face difficult decisions about ethical business practices, how to treat colleagues, or balancing work and personal life.
Praying for wisdom and guidance, they echo Paul’s prayer for the Philippians, asking God to help their love abound in knowledge and depth of insight. As they grow in understanding God’s Word and apply it to their lives, changes begin to manifest in their approach to work and relationships.
For instance, when faced with a decision that could benefit their career but compromise integrity, they discern what is best by relying on their deepening knowledge of God’s principles. They choose the path of honesty and righteousness, even if it means a slower career progression. Colleagues notice this integrity and respect them for it, making them a positive influence in the workplace.
Their love for colleagues also grows as they gain insight into their struggles and needs. They become more compassionate and supportive, offering encouragement and practical help. Their actions reflect the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, bringing glory and praise to God.
This illustration shows how Paul’s prayer is not just a lofty ideal but a practical guide for living a life that honors God. It reminds us that our love should be informed by knowledge and discernment, leading to actions that reflect Christ’s righteousness in our everyday lives.
As we reflect on this, may we pray that our love grows more and more.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word and the wisdom it imparts. We pray that our love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. Help us discern what is best and live pure and blameless lives filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ. May our lives bring glory and praise to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
May your love abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight so that you may discern what is best and be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. May you be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
