"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." Revelation 4:11 (NIV)
In the 1992 comedy movie Wayne's World, there is a scene in which the main characters Wayne, played by Mike Myers, and his friend Garth, played by Dana Carver, meet their rock star idol Alice Cooper backstage. When invited to stay and hang out with the band, they bow down repeatedly, saying, "We're not worthy." (Link to the scene) While humorous, the scene illustrates this idea of worthiness.
In the throne room scene of Revelation 4, we find the four winged creatures flying around day and night singing:
"'Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,'
who was, and is, and is to come."
With the elders, they bow down, placing their crowns before the throne of God and offering the praise in today's verse.
Anytime we come before God's throne, we do so humbly. We acknowledge His worthiness and our unworthiness.
In Genesis, God brought order from chaos, speaking all things into existence. We were created in His image, and He breathed his spirit of life into us. Adam and Eve, tempted by the serpent to be like God, rebelled by eating of the forbidden fruit. This did not change God's worthiness but brought about the condition of our unworthiness.
Instead of leaving us in this state, our gracious God sent His Son Jesus to offer us redemption. In accepting God's generous offer of salvation, we are made right, and through the Holy Spirit, we are guided on the continued path of worthiness.
As we humbly approach His throne each day, let us praise Him for creating, saving, and perfecting us, acknowledging His greatness and our continuing need for His grace. May we practice humility in daily interactions and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions and actions. May we seek fellowship and encouragement from fellow believers and continually grow in our love and obedience to Him. Foremost, may we always remember that we are made worthy only by His grace.
Heavenly Father, we humbly come before You, acknowledging Your worthiness and the grace by which You make us worthy. Thank You for creating us, redeeming us through Your Son, and guiding us by Your Holy Spirit. Help us to live each day in gratitude and reverence, continually growing in our love and obedience to You. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
