Beacons of Christ’s Light

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” - Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)

There is an old Southern Gospel song by Ronny Hinson, “The Lighthouse,” that beautifully illustrates the light of Jesus and how it guides us to salvation. Here’s the first verse and chorus from that song. The song tells of a lighthouse on a hillside that shines light to guide ships through the darkness safely. The singer expresses gratitude for the lighthouse, symbolizing Jesus, who guides us away from the dangers of sin and safely home.

In today’s verse, Paul writes that though we “were once darkness,” we “now are the light.” In living as children of God, like Jesus, we are to be the lighthouses in the Hinson song, reflecting Christ’s light and guiding others safely from the dark and stormy sea of sin to the shore of salvation.

Each person we save helps build more lighthouses for Christ. These lighthouses, in turn, will shine brightly, attracting others. If all in darkness were to respond to and follow the light, the stormy seas would soon be awash in light.

As we reflect on the imagery of the lighthouse, may we remember that we are called to be beacons of Christ’s light in a world shrouded in darkness–a world from which we once escaped. As the lighthouse of Christ has guided our ships to safety, our lives should guide others to the hope and salvation found in Jesus Christ. Living as children of the light can illuminate the path for those currently tossed about in the chaotic dark seas, helping them find their way to the safe harbor of God’s love.

Heavenly Father, God of light, we thank you for Jesus. You have guided us through our darkest times and stormy seas. May we reflect Your love and grace to others as Your children of light. May our lives be lighthouses, shining brightly and leading them to the safety and salvation found in You. May Your light shine through us in all we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
