“I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.” Philippians 3:10-11 (NIV)
Have you ever caught yourself picking up the habits, attitudes, or even the way of speaking of someone you really admire? Why do we naturally reflect the people we look up to? Psychologists call this "modeling" and "identification." Modeling happens when we observe someone we respect and start copying their behaviors or traits. Identification takes this a step further—it’s about connecting with their values and beliefs, almost as if you’re shaping part of yourself to be like them. These ideas help explain how we learn, grow, and build our sense of self by seeing others as examples.
In today’s passage, Paul expresses a desire that goes beyond simply knowing Christ—he yearns to embody His character and purpose. This is not a shallow recognition or distant respect; it’s a call for profound, personal transformation. Paul seeks to reflect the very essence of Christ, including His suffering, humility, and love. His words remind us that true discipleship surpasses mere intellectual understanding of Jesus's life and teachings; it invites us into a life fully shaped and guided by His example.
In verse 12, Paul acknowledges that he hasn’t yet attained perfection but presses on toward the goal—a life fully transformed and united with Christ. This idea of Christian perfection is not about achieving flawlessness in our human efforts but striving for spiritual maturity and complete alignment with God’s will.
How is this perfection possible? It is possible only through God’s grace and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. As followers of Christ, we "become like Jesus" not by our own strength but by surrendering our lives to Him, allowing His love, teachings, and example to shape us. It’s a journey of growing in faith, perseverance, humility, and service.
How can we become more like Jesus?
Adopt Christ’s mindset: Seek humility and selflessness, putting others before ourselves, as Christ did.
Embrace His example of love: Practice sacrificial love and compassion toward others.
Share in His mission: Be witnesses to the Gospel and actively serve and uplift those in need.
Pursue holiness: Consistently seek to grow closer to God through prayer, Scripture, and obedience to His teachings.
Paul’s words remind us that perfection is not a destination but a direction. By pressing on, we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus—the ultimate goal—and allow Him to perfect our hearts and minds, step by step.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that inspires us to become more like Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, we long to know Him and reflect His character and love in our lives. Teach us to walk humbly, love boldly, and serve faithfully, just as Jesus did. Through Your Holy Spirit, transform us daily, making us vessels of Your grace and truth. When we fall short, remind us that our perfection is found in You, and give us the strength to persevere. We surrender our lives to Your will, trusting in Your power to complete the good work You have begun in us. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
