Beyond “Good Enough”

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

Have you ever heard the expression "good enough"? Sometimes, it may be acceptable to settle for a balance between excellence and practical limitations. For instance, this idea works well in a simple do-it-yourself home improvement project, like replacing a faucet. The spigot no longer drips, and you've saved money by not hiring a plumber. On the other hand, "good enough" isn't an option in every scenario. If you're undergoing open-heart surgery, you definitely want the surgeon and their team to focus on excellence.

However, relying too often on "good enough" can lead to complacency and missed opportunities. Take the example of a worker tasked with creating a crucial report. If they adopt a "good enough" attitude, the report might meet the basic requirements but lack depth, innovation, or accuracy. This could result in missed insights, potential mistakes, and, ultimately, a lack of trust from colleagues and supervisors.

When it comes to our spiritual lives, the stakes are even higher. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV) encourages us to strive for excellence in our efforts, especially in our work for God. Settling for "good enough" in our spiritual endeavors could lead to regret and embarrassment. When standing before God's throne, we want to be known for our best, not just "good enough." Therefore, we should aim to do our best, ensuring our actions and efforts reflect our commitment and integrity.

Moreover, doing our best isn't a one-time effort. It's a continual process of growth and improvement. Each time we strive to improve on our best, we honor our potential and the opportunities we've been given. This mindset pushes us to keep learning, evolving, and reaching new heights in all areas of life.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, seeking Your guidance in all we do. Help us strive for excellence in our work and relationships, and walk with You. May we not settle for "good enough" but always seek to do our best and reflect Your love and truth in our actions. Give us the wisdom and strength to grow and improve continually, honoring You with our efforts. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
