“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” - I Corinthians 3:16
Read I Corinthians 3:1-17
Yesterday, I noticed a new home under construction. The walls were up, ready to be sided. As I observed the progress, I confess to being disappointed at missing the earlier stage—enjoying the progression from the hole in the ground to the sale sign. New construction reminds me how many people are involved in such a project: excavators, foundation contractors, framers, electricians, and plumbers, each bringing their gifts at the right time.
Similarly, Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NKJV) that we are the temple of God, and His Spirit dwells in us. Each of us has a unique role in God’s grand design. Just as different workers contribute to building a house, we, as believers, bring our diverse gifts to build up the body of Christ. Though we have different roles, we share one purpose: to build a dwelling place for God, as Paul and Apollos did in their work (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).
Paul further elaborates in verses 9-13a, “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it.”
Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV) reinforces this unity: “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”
And 1 Peter 2:5 (NIV) says, “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
We are not only laborers but also temples, and God lives within the house He constructed. Our collective efforts, guided by the Spirit, create a holy and unified temple for the Lord.
How might we apply these scriptures to our daily lives as laborers building and living within our temples?
Reflect on Your Role: Pray and reflect on the unique gifts and talents God has given you. Consider how you can use these gifts to serve your church and community. Are you a good listener? Offer support to someone in need. Are you skilled in organizing? Help coordinate church events or community projects.
Engage in Community: Building God’s temple involves the collective effort of the church community. Look for opportunities to collaborate with others. Join a small group, volunteer for a ministry, or participate in community outreach programs. Working together strengthens the bonds within the church and helps create a unified and holy temple for the Lord.
Encourage and Support Others: Recognize and appreciate the contributions of others. Encourage fellow believers in their roles and offer support where needed. A simple word of encouragement or a helping hand can make a significant difference. Remember, we are all part of the same body, and each part is essential.
Maintain the Temple: Just as a physical building requires maintenance, so does our spiritual temple. Regularly engage in spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, and worship. These practices help keep our spiritual lives healthy and aligned with God’s purposes.
Live Out Your Faith: Let your actions reflect the presence of God within you. Strive to live a life that honors God in all you do, whether at work, home or in the community. Your life can be a testimony to others of God’s love and grace.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of being Your temple, a dwelling place for Your Spirit. Help us recognize the unique roles You have given us and unite to build Your holy church. May we honor You in all we do, knowing that You live within us. Guide, strengthen, and fill us with Your love and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
