“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” - Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
Do you remember learning to ride a bike? It took a long time for me, as I've always been balance-challenged. Oh, I was fine when the training wheels were on. I had no problem pedaling, turning, or stopping. But the minute those assists came off, and I had to keep my weight balanced while doing those other things, the problem started. My family would run alongside me, holding onto the seat until I got going, let go, and inevitably I would tip over. This happened time after time, and I’m pretty sure that, at times, my family thought I’d never get the hang of it. The only thing that kept me going was my commitment to ride that bike, which would give me a new sense of freedom and accomplishment. Eventually, after a long time, I did.
How does that story relate to today’s verse? Just this: when we commit whatever we do to God, it will all be okay. Making that commitment doesn’t mean things will go smoothly. Like my bike riding, my yearning and belief that I would one day pedal independently did not come without several spills resulting in scrapes, Bactine, and band-aids.
Trying and failing can be part of our journey too. Our misadventures may be part of God’s plan for us as He refines us, teaches us, and strengthens our faith. What we perceive as failures may not be a sign of God’s disfavor but an opportunity for growth and deeper reliance on Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us to commit everything we do to You. We trust Your plan for us, Lord. Help us to accept the bumps and scrapes we receive along the way, not as failures but as a way of increasing our understanding of You and strengthening our faith and reliance on You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
