Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. - John 6:35 (NIV)
Have you ever found yourself desperate for a sign from God, praying fervently for a miracle, only to feel your faith wavering when no 'manna from heaven' seems to fall?
In John 6, Jesus performs the miracle of feeding the 5,000 with just five barley loaves and two fish (v. 8-11). This miraculous event left the crowd in awe, recognizing Jesus as "the Prophet" they had awaited (v. 14). They followed Him across the lake to Capernaum, eager for more signs and wonders.
Despite witnessing such an incredible miracle, the crowd focused on the physical evidence of Jesus' power rather than on who Jesus truly was—the Bread of Life. They demanded more signs, saying, "What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you?" (v. 30). Their desire for tangible proof overshadowed the deeper spiritual truth Jesus was revealing.
Jesus responded, emphasizing that it was not Moses but His Father who provided the true bread from heaven. He implored them to believe in Him, the true Bread of Life, sent to give life to the world (v. 32-33). Yet, the crowd’s faith hinged on continuous miraculous signs rather than trust in Jesus.
Today, we sometimes find ourselves in similar situations. We pray, asking God for clear signs or answers to our dilemmas. We look for tangible evidence of His presence and provision, expecting a modern-day “manna from heaven.” But our faith can be shaken when our prayers aren't answered in the way we expect.
Consider those moments when you've prayed earnestly, seeking a job, healing, or a clear direction, only to be met with silence. It's easy to become discouraged and question God's involvement in our lives. Yet, verse 35 reminds us that Jesus Himself is our sustenance. He asks us to come to Him, believing He will meet our deepest needs, even when we don't see the evidence immediately.
Faith goes beyond what is seen. It is a trust in God's character and promises. Jesus is the Bread of Life, our constant and unchanging source of spiritual nourishment. Even when the tangible signs seem absent, we are called to trust in Him wholeheartedly.
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge our tendency to seek tangible signs of Your presence. Help us instead to focus on Jesus, the Bread of Life, and trust in Him even when we don't see immediate answers. Strengthen our faith and remind us daily of Your love and faithfulness. Teach us to rely on You completely, knowing we will never go hungry or thirsty when we trust in You. Thank You for being our constant source of hope and strength. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
