But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.” 2 Chronicles 15:7 (NRSVUE)
We all like to be rewarded for our work. In the business world, we might receive a financial bonus at the end of the year. But we can also feel rewarded for something we do for ourselves, like a hobby. Whether it is for work or a hobby, there are times when we may feel a temporary sense of discouragement. Times when there are temporary roadblocks and setbacks. When that happens, a word of encouragement from others helps us overcome what is temporary, allowing us to focus on the reward.
In 2 Chronicles 15:1-7, we encounter the story of how the Spirit of God comes upon the prophet Azariah, as he goes to meet King Asa. He encourages Asa and all of Judah and Benjamin, the Southern Kingdom, to seek the Lord, emphasizing that they will find Him if they seek Him earnestly. Azariah reminds them of their ancestors who turned away from God and faced many troubles. He reassures them that God will not forsake them if they remain faithful. Azariah then offers encouragement: "But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded."
Just as Azariah reassures Asa and his people that their efforts will be rewarded if they remain steadfast in their faith, we hear how a word of encouragement can help us stay focused on what is truly important. The support and encouragement of the Holy Spirit and others help us overcome obstacles and stay motivated.
The rewards for our efforts and perseverance are not just reserved for the afterlife and the coming of Christ's kingdom. They are also present in our daily lives. We can experience the blessings of our hard work, the joy of accomplishments, and the fulfillment of realizing our goals. Whether big or small, these rewards remind us constantly of God's presence and faithfulness in our lives. When we remain steadfast, we secure our future in God's kingdom and embrace the abundant life He offers us here and now.
As we reflect on Azariah's message to Asa, remember that our perseverance and faith are key to overcoming life's challenges. It's not just the rewards we seek but the journey we undertake and the encouragement we offer each other that make a difference. Let us stay courageous, keep our hands strong, and find strength in the support of the Holy Spirit and our community. And in every endeavor, trust that our dedication will be rewarded, and let this promise inspire you to keep moving forward.
Heavenly Father, we seek Your strength and encouragement in times of doubt and difficulty. Help us to remain steadfast in our faith and dedicated to our work. Remind us of Your promises and the rewards that await us. May we find joy and fulfillment in our efforts and be a source of encouragement to others. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
