Focus on the Eternal

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. - Colossians 3:1 (NIV)

I've always been clumsy and uncoordinated, and sadly, this has not improved with age. For example, I recently tripped on a flat, dry surface with no obstacles in sight. Knowing this about myself, I spend much time looking down at the ground when walking, especially in the woods with loose stones and exposed tree roots. There’s a good reason for this; however, by being so hyper-focused on the ground, I miss out on the beauty around me, failing to see what is above.

The same thing happens in our spiritual lives; at times, we remain fixated on earthly things. Our time and energies become too consumed with the here and now that we forget to see and seek the ways of God, settling for the substandard practices of man instead.

This is not a new problem; in today's verse, Paul reminds the early church to focus on Christ. He encourages them to shift their sights on things above towards a higher standard, setting aside man's sinful worldly norms and seeking God's pure ways. By doing so, we can experience greater peace, purpose, and alignment with God's will in our daily lives.

Heavenly Father, thank you for raising us with Christ. As we study your word and commune with you, help us to understand your ways. Teach us and guide us. Help us keep our eyes firmly focused above. Take our lives and make them wholly yours. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
