“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)
Raise your hand if you are a car singer! I confess that sometimes, in the confines of the car, when a song comes on, I sing along-and I sound so good. I’m pitch-perfect, and the words, as I often have misremembered them, perfectly sync with the music. Whether I’m singing with Alan Jackson, Freddie Mercury, or Phil Wickham doesn't matter until the music suddenly stops and I hear my true voice singing off-key with an obvious no sense of rhythm.
We all have unique God-given talents, but for me singing is definitely not one of them. Although my voice tends to stray off-key, and my rhythm often misses the beat. It doesn’t discourage me from singing joyfully, especially when a favorite song plays on the radio. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about the joy and expression of singing.
When I imagine God singing, I picture a rich, soothing voice full of warmth and love, perfectly in tune and with flawless rhythm. The Bible often talks about the angels singing; I picture God as the choir director with a deeper voice. God's song is not just about hitting the perfect notes with perfect timing—it's about His profound and boundless love for us. It's a voice that calms the storms within us, comforts us in our sorrows, and celebrates our joys with divine harmony.
Even more profound than the tonal quality of His voice is why He is singing—His love for us is so great, so immense, that mere words are not enough to express it. Singing is an expression of His delight in us, His cherished creation. It's a beautiful reminder of how deeply we are loved and valued.
Just as the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son rejoices when his lost son returns, God rejoices over our return to Him. The father said, "For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found" (Luke 15:24). This same joy and celebration are reflected in God's song over us. Our return to Him brings immeasurable joy to His heart, and He responds with singing.
God’s song is not just an ordinary tune but a divine melody that resonates with His immense love and joy over us. It reassures us that our return brings immense delight to our Heavenly Father, no matter how far we may have wandered.
Just as I sing in my car, off-key and out of rhythm, with pure joy, God sings over us with perfect love and delight. His singing represents His presence with us, His salvation, and His unending love. In our imperfection, we find comfort in knowing that God takes great delight in us, quiets us with His love, and rejoices over us with singing.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your immense love and the joy You take in us. Help us to remember how deeply you cherish us and that Your song over us is a melody of love, comfort, and celebration. As we go about our daily lives, may we find solace in Your presence and be reminded of Your unending grace. When we stray, guide our steps back to You with open hearts, knowing You rejoice over us with singing. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
