For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. Psalms 139:13-14 NRSV
Two needles, good yarn, cast on, knit, purl, and cast off. That's the extent of my knowledge of knitting. I might manage a lopsided pot holder with great difficulty and a lot of time. But a skilled knitter, with apparent ease, can produce beautiful sweaters and shawls with complicated stitching and different colored yarns.
God is the most advanced knitter, combining threads in our creation. He’s not only the artist of our design but brings together the matter which makes up the thread. God uses yarn for our physical forms, small enough to reside in our mother's womb yet elastic enough to grow. Intricately woven with the flesh is the spiritual yarn, that energy that makes us who we are.
Before the knitting begins, God sees the unique pattern for each of us. He had made us with different colors and stitches for various purposes–some hats, some sweaters, and some mittens. But all of us are created from the Crafter's love for his creation.
Gracious God, you have knitted us uniquely and wonderfully together from your love. We marvel at your artistry in ourselves and others and thank you for our differences and the things we have in common. We offer our humble praise and adoration for all your creations. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
