Immutable

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Do you like things to remain the same? Most of us do. Sometimes, we may even grow upset when our sense of stability and routine becomes disturbed. As children, we may have found changes to our perception of normal upsetting. For example, going to a new place or leaving at a different time may have evoked emotional responses. As we grow older, we hopefully learn to accept change without outbursts, but it doesn’t mean we still like it. We like sameness.

In today’s verse, we read of Jesus's sameness. In theology, we refer to this as immutability, meaning that Jesus cannot change. Yes, the Son of God becoming human, but he is also divine, residing with the Father and the Holy Spirit since the beginning. Does His immutability mean Jesus cannot change His mind? No, it does not. As our intercessor with the Father, Jesus listens to our prayers and can be moved by them. While His divine attributes, such as compassion, kindness, mercy, love, and grace, remain constant, He is responsive to our heartfelt prayers and advocates on our behalf.

Are we also meant to be immutable as disciples of Jesus? Sort of. Our spiritual goal is to grow in his likeness. As we grow in perfection, we will become more immutable. But in the process of that sanctification, we must be open to change. In our transformation, we continually move forward, away from a routine of sinfulness toward righteousness.

We can find profound comfort in Jesus’ eternal attributes of compassion, kindness, mercy, love, and grace. In Him, we have the perfect model for our spiritual journey. Even as our lives change, His character remains our solid foundation. As we embrace the ongoing transformation of sanctification, we are invited to reflect His unchanging nature in our thoughts, actions, and relationships—growing ever closer to His likeness.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the unwavering nature of Your Son, Jesus Christ—our refuge and constant guide. Amid our ever-changing, chaotic world, help us anchor our hearts in His eternal compassion, mercy, and love. Grant us strength and grace to pursue a life of holiness, leaving behind the old and embracing new growth as we strive to reflect His immutable character. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
