Marching in Step with the Spirit

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” - Galatians 5:25 (NIV)

One of my favorite musicals is the 1962 film The Music Man. While there is a lot of great music in the movie, perhaps the most memorable scene is when the marching band, perfectly in sync with the music and steps, marches from the Madison Public Library in River City, playing “76 Trombones.”

Seventy six trombones led the big parade

With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand.

They were followed by rows and rows of the finest virtuosos,

The cream of ev'ry famous band.

In our spiritual lives, we are led by the Holy Spirit. Like the musicians in the film, keeping in step aligns us with the music of God. Both our physical and spiritual lives become harmonious, and we move with precision and purpose.

Each of us is a different instrument–some are trombones, some cornets, and others play other instruments in the rows upon rows that follow. But there is only one leader–the Holy Spirit, our drum major who sets the tempo and signals our movements.

Gracious and loving God, thank You for the Holy Spirit, who leads us and keeps us in step with Your will. Help us listen to its music and sync our steps with Your music so we, Your band, may play together as one body. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
