Questions of Jesus

"Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” – John 20:15 (NLT)

In today’s verse, Jesus asks Mary Magdalene two questions: “Why are you crying?” and “Who are you looking for?” Though these questions are spoken to Mary in a specific moment at the garden tomb, they resonate far beyond that moment in history. They are questions for all of humanity, inviting us to reflect on our shared struggles and deepest desires.

“Why are you crying?” speaks to the universal experience of sorrow and loss. Mary’s tears stem from the pain of believing that Jesus had been taken, yet her encounter reveals that Jesus is never absent, even in the darkest moments. This question reminds us that Jesus sees and understands the pain of every human heart. His compassion transcends circumstance, meeting us exactly where we are. This love isn't reserved for a select few—it extends to all who grieve, offering comfort and hope.

“Who are you looking for?” challenges us to examine the focus of our lives. Are we seeking fulfillment in temporary things, or are we searching for something eternal? Have you ever looked for someone—or something—to fill the emptiness, not even fully understanding what you were searching for? Jesus' question invites every person, regardless of their faith or background, to recognize their deepest longings. The resurrection context of this passage reveals that Jesus is the answer, not just for Mary, but for all of humanity. He meets us, calls us by name, and offers us the eternal hope we seek.

These questions are timeless and deeply personal. They challenge us to pause and consider the purpose of our lives, the source of our sorrows, and the direction of our search for meaning. They remind us that Jesus meets us where we are—whether in joy or sorrow, belief or doubt—and calls us to a deeper understanding of His love and purpose for our lives. For those seeking practical steps, finding Jesus often begins with prayer, reading Scripture, serving others, or simply quiet reflection, listening for His voice.

Lord Jesus, thank you for asking the questions that touch the core of our humanity. You see our tears and understand our struggles, offering comfort and hope to all who seek you. Help us to reflect on what we are truly searching for and to recognize that you are the answer to our deepest longings. May your love reach every heart, drawing us closer to you and one another. Empower us to live in the joy of Your resurrection and to carry your hope into the world. In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
