The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. - Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)
I know very little about chemistry. However, I do know that mixing the wrong things can achieve unintended results—like smoke or an explosion. Ironically, despite my limited knowledge of chemistry, I worked for 19 years at a chemical company, safely in a role outside the lab. During that time, I developed a healthy respect for chemists. Their expertise came from knowing what to mix and what not to mix to achieve the desired results. Years of education, experience, and a keen interest in developing things beneficial to society made them good chemists. They had a respect and reverence for results and, especially, safety.
Today’s verse discusses the “fear of the Lord.” The Hebrew word for fear used here is "יִרְאָה" (yirah), which means to have a profound respect, reverence, and awe rather than terror or dread. It signifies a recognition of God's majesty and authority, which inspires a desire to live according to His will. This reverential fear is seen as the foundation of true knowledge and wisdom.
Just as chemists must carefully consider what substances they mix, we must approach our lives with a deep respect for God's wisdom and guidance. This kind of reverence can guide us to make wise decisions and live in a way that honors Him. When we have a healthy respect for God's guidance, we open ourselves to true understanding. This fear leads us to seek His wisdom and to align our actions with His will, much like a chemist seeks knowledge to create positive outcomes. By respecting and revering God, we can gain deeper insight into life and grow in wisdom.
On the other hand, what happens if a chemist ignores or disrespects the principles of chemistry? The results can be dangerous, even catastrophic. Similarly, when we disregard or despise God's wisdom and instruction, we invite chaos and harm into our lives. Proverbs 1:7 calls those who despise wisdom and instruction “fools” because they fail to recognize the value of God's guidance. Ignoring God's wisdom can lead to poor decisions, harmful consequences, and a life that lacks true understanding and direction. Just as a chemist's respect for chemistry principles leads to beneficial results, our reverence for God and His wisdom can lead us to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.
Heavenly Father, we come before You in awe of Your majesty and wisdom. Help us to understand what it means to fear You, not with terror, but with profound respect and reverence. Guide our hearts and minds to seek Your wisdom in all we do. May we always respect Your instructions and live in a way that honors You. Help us to avoid the pitfalls of ignoring Your guidance and embrace the path of true understanding. Thank You for being our ultimate source of wisdom and knowledge. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
