Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NIV)
I have done some running off and on over the years. I would feel the itch to get outside and run during the long winter months. When the snow and frozen puddles are still on the ground, I would pick an upcoming 5K (3.1 miles) race as an incentive to begin training. Though I knew it was doubtful I would win the race from the outset, I gave this training my all, running several times a week. I ran on different surfaces and terrains, I worked on my breathing, and did sprints to work on my speed. The training process was the same whether running a 5K or a longer race.
In the race of life, we find ourselves on a spiritual track, running toward a heavenly prize. The apostle Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 encourage us to run with purpose, determination, and endurance. Just like a runner preparing for a 5K race, we must give our all—mind, body, and spirit—to this journey.
Just as a runner diligently trains, we must prepare ourselves spiritually. We run on different surfaces—sometimes smooth, sometimes rocky—but we persevere. Our spiritual training involves prayer, Scripture study, worship, and fellowship. Just as proper breathing sustains physical stamina, our connection with God through prayer and meditation sustains our spiritual endurance.
Unlike relay runners who pass the baton, we don’t stop running after a short while. When, by our witness, we invite others into the race, we don’t stop. We keep going, fueled by faith, hope, and love. We run as far and as fast as we can with these others, trusting in God’s faith to sustain them in the race that continues. Our finish line isn’t a physical tape—it’s eternity with God.
Though only one person comes in first, our ultimate goal is to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant” from our heavenly training Coach.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the race of faith You’ve set before us. Help us run with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus—the Author and Finisher of our faith. May we run not for fleeting accolades but for the imperishable crown that awaits us. Strengthen us when we grow weary and remind us that we’re part of a grand relay, passing on the torch of faith to future generations. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
