Running Toward the Light

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. - 1 John 1:7 (NIV)

I joined the local running club for their Thursday night group run a few weeks ago. We started at 6:00, so on the way back, it was dusk. While I wasn’t concerned about seeing the pavement, there were periodic streetlights, and the surface was pretty smooth–I was slightly anxious that I wouldn’t be seen by the cars. Some seasoned runners had prepared for this, wearing a device that lights up. It was helpful for the vehicles to see the runners and those running at the back of the pack, like me, to see the way ahead.

The Bible talks about light and darkness–righteousness and sin–but it seems much of our time is spent in twilight. We are running towards the light, but the shadows loom in from the sides. What if there were no light, and instead, we were left stumbling in the darkness? What a terrible situation, right?

But God did not leave us in that state of despair. Instead, the Father sent the Son to bring light into the world. Despite the shadows that creep in, we are never alone when we accept Jesus as our light. This idea is beautifully encapsulated in John 1:5: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

We are also not running alone. That evening, though I was well in the rear, friends were in front and other runners behind. Had I not arrived, my friends would have come back for me. If I had stumbled, those following would have helped me. Of course, we have another runner with us–the Holy Spirit, that unseen but superbly felt presence of God, who guides us through the shadows as we keep our eyes firmly fixed upon the light.

Investing in a running light vest seems wise as we turn back our clocks this weekend and darkness falls earlier. Yes, I have another metaphor. The light serves not only as protection for the runner but also shines for those following.

God of Grace, Thank You for guiding us in times of darkness. As we run towards Your light, help us to shine brightly for others, sharing Your love and mercy. May we always be aware of Your presence and remember that we are never alone. We are grateful for the fellowship of friends and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who leads us through every shadow. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
