The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)
I'm currently streaming a police drama no longer in syndication called Numb3rs that centers around an FBI agent, Don Eppes (Rob Morrow), and his brilliant mathematician brother, Charlie (David Krumholtz), who together solve complex crimes. While it is a police drama, it's also about searching. In his search for meaning, Don returns to his roots in Judaism. At the same time, another character, Charlie's colleague and friend, astrophysicist Larry Fleinhardt (Peter MacNicol), yearns to believe in something greater than science.
Today's verse reminds us that true wisdom begins with reverence for God. This begins when we respond to God's grace and embrace a relationship with Him. In the tradition of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, this is known as Prevenient Grace, the grace that precedes our awareness, enabling us to seek and respond to God. It's a reminder that God's grace is always at work, drawing us toward Him.
In Numb3rs, we see Don's journey back to Judaism as a response to this ever-present grace, which guides him toward wisdom and understanding. Similarly, Larry's yearning for something beyond science can be seen as the beginning of wisdom inspired by Prevenient Grace.
Both characters' stories highlight the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, as Proverbs 1:7 encourages. Their journeys remind us that seeking true wisdom begins with a reverence for God and is inspired by His grace, which contrasts with those who "despise wisdom," which can be seen in some of the criminals and antagonists in the show. However, it's important to note that even they are not beyond the reach of Prevenient Grace. God's grace is constantly at work, inviting everyone, regardless of their actions, to turn toward wisdom and understanding.
We can reflect on how God's grace guides us toward true wisdom and knowledge–an understanding of who He is and His role for us–encouraging us to seek and respond to His call. Reflecting on my journey, I see how God's grace has guided me through challenges and uncertainties, leading me to a deeper understanding of His love and purpose.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unending grace guiding us toward true wisdom and understanding. As we navigate our daily lives, may we always seek knowledge that begins with a deep reverence for You. Help us recognize and respond to Your call, trusting in Your guidance and love. We pray for the courage to embrace the wisdom You offer and to share it with others. May Your grace continue to work within us, leading us to fulfill the purpose You have for our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
