Spiritual Investment

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord , and he will reward them for what they have done.” - Proverbs 19:17

In our daily lives, we often think about investments in terms of finances, careers, or personal growth. However, the Bible encourages us to consider a different kind of investment—one that yields eternal rewards. This is the concept of spiritual investment.

Proverbs 19:17 tells us that being kind to the poor is like lending to the Lord, and He will reward us for our generosity. This verse highlights the importance of compassion and generosity, reminding us that our acts of kindness do not go unnoticed by God. When we help those in need, we are making a spiritual investment that God Himself promises to repay.

In Matthew 10:42, Jesus emphasizes that even the smallest acts of kindness, such as giving a cup of cold water to a disciple, will be rewarded. This teaches us that no act of kindness is too small in God's eyes. Every gesture of love and support we offer to others is significant and valued.

Matthew 25:31-46, the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats, further illustrates this principle. Jesus describes the final judgment, where people are separated based on their treatment of “the least of these.” Those who have fed the hungry, given drink to the thirsty, welcomed strangers, clothed the naked, cared for the sick, and visited prisoners are welcomed into eternal life. This parable underscores that our actions towards others reflect our relationship with Christ.

This parable underscores that our actions towards others reflect our relationship with Christ. With this in mind, here are some practical ways we can apply the principle of spiritual investment today:

  • Support Local Charities: Contribute to organizations that provide food, shelter, and other necessities to those in need. Volunteering your time can also make a significant difference. For example, throughout October, Pearl Street UMC is conducting a coat drive for L Street Mission. You can donate that gently worn, no longer used coat to someone in need.

  • Personal Acts of Kindness: Look for opportunities to help individuals directly. This could be as simple as buying a meal for someone in need or offering to help a neighbor with their groceries. If you have a passion for cooking or baking, do what you love and share it with those without.

  • Community Involvement: Participate in community programs that aim to uplift people experiencing poverty. This could include organizing or joining food drives, clothing donations, or community clean-up events. There are many ways of getting involved in our city, whatever your passion. If you have an area of particular interest, recovery programs (Stairway to Recovery), helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Arc), those in need of food and furniture (My Brothers Keeper), or the front-line triage work to help those living on the streets (L Street Mission) to name only a few.

  • Advocacy: Use your voice to advocate for policies that support the poor and marginalized. This could involve writing to local representatives, participating in awareness campaigns, or supporting initiatives to reduce poverty.

  • Education and Empowerment: Offer your skills and knowledge to help others improve their situation. This could be through tutoring, job training, or financial literacy workshops. There is an increasing need for volunteers to be translators and ESL teachers. We could use your gifts at L Street Mission each Saturday if you speak Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Portuguese.

  • Prayer and Spiritual Support: Pray for those in need and offer spiritual support. Sometimes, a listening ear and a kind word can be as valuable as material assistance.

By integrating these actions into our daily lives, we can embody the spirit of Proverbs 19:17, Matthew 10:42, and Matthew 25, positively impacting those around us and storing up treasures in heaven. How will you start making spiritual investments today?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunity to invest in Your kingdom through acts of kindness and compassion. Help us to see the needs around us and respond with generosity and love. Make us aware of the spiritual gifts You have given us, and guide us in using them to serve others and glorify Your name. May our actions reflect Your heart and bring glory to Your name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
