The Joy of Generosity

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. - Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)

For years, I struggled to fully grasp this verse's profound truth. I understood the words that blessing others brings blessings in return, but my heart harbored doubts. Despite witnessing my parents faithfully tithe at least 10% of their income to the church and never once seeing our family in want, my belief in this promise wavered. Our home was modest yet comfortable, and our table was always laden with food. God’s provision was evident, yet my faith in His abundance was lacking, revealing my selfishness and my struggle with trust.

Over time, God’s faithfulness became undeniable in my life. As the church treasurer, I often faced seemingly insurmountable budget deficits. How could our small congregation possibly meet such financial challenges? But God, in His infinite wisdom and generosity, never failed us. Working with the L Street Mission to aid Brockton’s unhoused and marginalized—a ministry without a formal budget—has demonstrated God’s miraculous provision. Non-monetary donations arrive by God’s grace each week, enabling us to help feed, clothe, and provide toiletry products to those most in need. Reflecting on the lean times in my own life, I am reminded of how God’s abundant blessings have never ceased.

Every Sunday, when we present our offerings, we seek God’s blessings on their use. These gifts are not just our contributions to the church; they are a return of God’s gifts given back to Him. They extend beyond meeting the church’s needs supporting local and international missional activities. In giving, we are refreshed and refresh others with the basic necessities and hope found in the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Loving and Generous God, we thank You for Your abundant gifts. Help us to have open and generous hearts, reflecting Your love through our giving. May our offerings be acceptable to You, and may they be used to further Your mission, bringing hope and love to those in need. Teach us what being a genuinely missional person means, and guide us to share Your love and hope with the world. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
