“The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’” Matthew 21:9 (NIV)
Today's devotion is inspired by a fictional news report I once crafted as a sermon. It narrates Jesus' (or Yeshua's) triumphal entry into Jerusalem through the eyes of a Roman news reporter. As we read, let us imagine the scene as eyewitnesses might have experienced it, full of awe and anticipation.
Roman News Network Breaking News Date: 1st Nisan, AD 33, Jerusalem
Headline: "The Enigmatic Preacher from Nazareth: Yeshua of Galilee Makes Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem"
Reporting live from Jerusalem, Marcus, son of Gaius.
In an extraordinary event, the preacher and healer Yeshua of Galilee entered the city today. Riding humbly on a donkey, he fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah, which speaks of the coming of a king in humility. Crowds lined the streets, waving palm branches and shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
Yeshua’s entry is just the latest development in a ministry marked by miracles, bold teachings, and controversy. His works include healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and even raising the dead. Recent reports from Bethany describe how he called Lazarus—dead for four days—back to life, leaving witnesses stunned and leading many to proclaim him as the Messiah.
Yeshua has stirred controversy not only through his teachings and miracles but also through the company he keeps. Unlike many religious leaders of his time, he has been seen dining with tax collectors, associating with sinners, and speaking to Samaritans—groups traditionally found undesirable by Jewish society. Just last week, witnesses reported Yeshua visiting the home of Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector in Jericho, sparking outrage among some religious leaders. These actions, while celebrated by many, have intensified accusations from some Pharisees and scribes, who claim Yeshua defies sacred traditions. His radical inclusivity continues to challenge societal norms and provoke both admiration and opposition.
Although some religious leaders view Yeshua as a threat to their authority and fear that his growing influence could provoke Roman intervention, the crowd today hailed him as the "Son of David"—a messianic title—and saw his entry as a sign of hope.
As the city buzzes with excitement approaching Passover and tension mounts, we at Roman News Network will continue to bring you updates on this unfolding story. Who is Yeshua of Nazareth? A teacher? A prophet? A king? Or something greater? Time will tell.
Signing off for now, RNN reporter Marcus, son of Gaius.
And as time has told, the meaning of these events continues to echo through generations, calling us to respond in faith and devotion. While this fictional report captures the historical and spiritual significance of Jesus's triumphant entry, its message continues to resonate deeply today.
As Holy Week unfolds, we know the jubilation of Palm Sunday gives way to deep sorrow and, ultimately, triumphant joy. Jesus's journey to the cross—his sacrifice and resurrection—offers a profound message of love and redemption. For Christians today, this is a time to reflect on how we welcome Jesus into our lives. Are we laying down palm branches of devotion and trust or holding back? As we prepare for Easter, let us embrace the hope that Christ brings and live out his teachings in our daily lives.
King Jesus, as we reflect on Your triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we are reminded of Your humility, love, and the hope You bring. May we, like those who shouted 'Hosanna,' recognize You as the Savior and King of our lives. Help us to welcome You into our hearts and follow You with faith and devotion. As we journey through Holy Week, may our hearts be renewed by Your grace. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
