The Unchanging Word in a Changing World

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” - Romans 15:4 (NIV)

As a young teen, my uncle Jerry got me into reading Louis L’Amour books about the American West. Many of his stories depicted the lives of cowboys, frontiersmen, and pioneers. He spun colorful yarns describing their adventures and hardships in the settlement of the Wild West. While historically accurate, these books represent a period that no longer exists. The independent ranches have been replaced by corporations, and the booming little towns with dirt streets and swinging saloon doors have become struggling cities or ghost towns. History moved on, and the setting of the story changed.

In contrast to the ever-changing scenes of history, God's Word remains constant and unchanging. Though written thousands of years ago, the Bible continues to be relevant and alive today. It speaks to our hearts, offering wisdom and guidance for godly living.

Though the players and the scenes of our lives change, the narrative of human nature remains the same. We still face the temptation of sin and often make the same wrong choices. Yet, the wisdom of Scripture serves as a steadfast source of instruction and hope. It teaches us about God's enduring love and His unwavering care for His creation.

God Himself never changes. His love and care for us remain steadfast, just as they were for the people of the Bible. Hebrews 13:8 tells us, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." This assurance gives us hope and confidence in a constantly shifting world.

As we navigate the changing landscapes of our lives, let us hold fast to the unchanging Word of God. It is a living testament to His eternal truth and love. Just as Louis L’Amour's stories captured the essence of a bygone era, the Bible captures the timeless truths that guide us through every season of life.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unchanging Word, which provides us with wisdom, guidance, and hope. In a constantly changing world, help us hold fast to Your eternal truths. Remind us of Your steadfast love and care for us and guide us in living lives that honor You. May we find comfort and encouragement in the Scriptures, knowing that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
