Unity in God's Kingdom

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Psalms 133:1 (NIV)

The day is finally here: Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Many have already cast their ballots, and others will do so today. As we have seen throughout this race, tomorrow—or whenever the election results are certified and announced—there will be some folks happy and some unhappy. This is nothing new to our political system; it has been confirmed in every presidency, including George Washington; the loyalists to King George would not have been pleased with anyone elected.

However, while we may never expect unity under our earthly leaders, we can experience unity in God. Psalm 133 was written by a worldly leader, King David, who knew all about loyalties and divisions that are part of earthly kingdoms. As God’s anointed, he recognized the potential of what could be when Israel's allegiance was to God.

In John 17:20-23, Jesus prays for all believers, asking that they may be one, just as He and the Father are one. This unity is not just a superficial agreement but a deep, spiritual connection rooted in the love and purpose of God. Jesus' prayer emphasizes that our unity reflects the divine relationship within the Trinity and is a powerful witness to the world of God's love.

In Ephesians 1:9-10, the author, traditionally considered Paul, further underscores this theme, revealing God's ultimate plan to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. This divine purpose calls us to look beyond our differences and strive for the unity that God desires for His creation.

Reflecting on these scriptures, we understand that true unity is good and pleasant because it aligns with God's will and brings His blessings. It is a unity that transcends political affiliations and personal preferences, focusing instead on our shared identity as children of God.

Today and in the future, let us remain focused on unity with God and one another. Regardless of who wins the election, let us keep our eyes fixed on the unity that Christ prayed for and that God has purposed. Let us pray for our leaders, whether they win or lose, that they will seek God's wisdom and strive for unity in their governance. May we always strive to do what is good and pleasant for each other and everyone else, reflecting the love and grace of our Lord.

Gracious God, we thank You for the unity that can be enjoyed when we seek to do Your will. Regardless of who wins this election, help us remember that, ultimately, You are in control. Comfort those disappointed by the outcome and help those who are pleased to be gracious. Help us, Lord, to be humble and respectful. Lord, help us focus on the eternal and strive for Your kingdom here on earth. May we constantly seek Your wisdom and pursue those things that are good and pleasant, which are examples of unity. We ask blessings upon our leaders and ask that they humble themselves before You, not pursuing their agendas but Your guidance. We pray these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
